Jennifer Lenhart

About Jennifer: I began practicing yoga in 1994 after curiosity about it had me pick up a woman's guide to yoga at a small bookshop when I was a college student. I practiced on my own at home for years before I worked up the courage to go to a yoga studio - having never been good at sports or at belonging to a gym, I was self-conscious and thought I had to be able to do things like the challenging Lotus posture or a headstand to be welcome in a yoga class. I was so glad to learn I was wrong about that! When I began practicing with my teacher Marni Task, my life changed. In her classes, I learned that yoga is so much more than just the postures, that I wanted to be a yogi, and that I wanted to learn to teach others this transformative practice. I graduated from Marni's yoga teacher training program in 2009, and I've been teaching ever since.

In my classes, I encourage students to start where they are and to see how the gifts of a yoga practice can be carried off their mats and into their day-to-day lives. I offer detailed alignment instruction, suggestions for modifications and use of props, and hands-on assists. In class, expect to hear inspirational music (and silence too), do some devotional chanting, consider how the teachings of yoga can be applied to modern life, be asked to bring awareness and focus to the breath, be encouraged to find optimal alignment in the postures, and be invited to bring mindfulness to all aspects of the practice - body, mind, and soul. And probably enjoy some laughter too. Satsang is the Sanskrit word that means "community," and yoga class is one way we build satsang - gathering with other travelers on the path to share breath and inspiration to support one another in our practices.

Jennifer Lenhart instructs the following:
  • Deep Stretch (Vision Underground - 2600 Church Ave)
  • Inspired by Yin Yoga, this class targets the deep muscles and connective tissue of the body using a Yin approach: meditative stillness for a long duration. Deep, conscious breathing and attention to the present moment are encouraged as students hold poses passively for several minutes at a time. Designed to be accessible to all levels of yoga practitioner, poses are generally practiced on the floor and modifications will be offered. Class will finish with restorative, supportive poses preparing the body and mind for final relaxation and meditation.

  • Open-Level Flow
  • Open Level Flow classes focus on alignment, attention to the breath, and mindfulness, inviting the body to move with increased awareness and ease. Often, we'll hold poses a bit longer and take more time to explain the subtleties of the pose, incorporating plenty of modifications to address physical limitations or to make the poses more challenging. This class will be accessible to any level of practitioner, whether it's your 5th or 500th class.

  • Candlelight Relaxation and Restorative Yoga
  • Replenish your spirit, relax your mind, and feel completely nurtured and cared for in this special two-hour long Candlelight Relaxation and Restorative class led by Jennifer Lenhart, CYT/E-RYT 200.

You'll move through slow moving, simple, gentle postures as well as some restorative postures (restorative yoga is the yoga of non-doing, and you'll be positioned in comfortable poses while being supported by props such as blankets, blocks, and yoga straps). Poses are held longer to allow the body to relax into them. When fully supported, the body assumes a state of active relaxation, lengthening muscles and relieving tension effortlessly. Soothing music, deep and conscious breathing, aromatherapy, gentle assists and massage, candlelight, and use of props encourage total relaxation. This experience will be restful and replenishing in order to promote harmony of mind, body, and spirit. A period of guided meditation will also be included. Suitable for everyone - no previous yoga experience is necessary.
